Route No 101 - Friday 19 March 2004
A guided half day walk on the Franz Josef Glacier . . .

| New Zealand Index | Waiheke Island | QueenCharlotte's Track | Franz Josef Glacier | The Milford Track |

The approach was just almost 2km and we had to stop to put on our crampons before walking onto the ice. We climbed up the glacier for almost 2 hours passing a range of interesting ice features before retracing our steps back to the bus. It was an amazing experience to see this live mass of ice at such close quarters.
We arrived in the little township of Franz Josef around mid-day and called in the tourist information office to find that we could join a guided walk on the glacier starting at 12.30pm. We just had time to grab a quick sandwich. Then we joined our group to collect our crampons (trademark "Tallonz" !) and other kit. Then a short bus ride to the start of the approach path to the glacier.
