General Directions

The walk starts at map ref. SE 609 902 next to the church of St. Mary Magdalene on East Moor Road about 6.5km north of Helmsley. There's room to park on the roadside opposite a red telephone box. Take the public footpath along a track heading east next to the red phone box. Continue along the footpath in the field around the edge of Church Plantation to Lund Farm.

Follow the path in a north easterly direction past Lund Farm to the ford across Bonfield Gill. Follow the path up the far bank of the stream and where the paths cross at map ref. SE 616 908, turn left and follow the path climbing up across the open moor for about 1.4km to the moorland track called Little Roll Gate at map ref. SE 625 920.

At the track turn right and follow the track for about 800m. Here bear left to follow a public footpath dropping down across Otterhill Common. After about 2km along this path it crosses another path at map ref. SE 642 914. Turn left here and follow the footpath down the hillside to the ford across Hodge Beck at Mitchell Hagg Wath. Cross the ford and turn left to cross a smaller watercourse then follow the track up the end of the hill to the edge of the woodland at the boundary of the open access land (note: the public footpath shown on the map does not seem to exist on the ground)

At the open access land follow the public footpath along Ankness Ridge and cross the fields to Ankness farm. The path goes through the farmyard (it's now a renovated country residence) and out along the farm access road to a bend in the public road at map ref. SE 637 944. At the road turn left and walk along the road for about 350m, then turn left off the road to follow a bridleway along a farm access road passing Moor House Farm and Low Lidmoor farm to reach a footbridge over Hodge Beck at map ref. SE 621 948.

Continue along the bridleway in a south easterly direction up the hillside and across the fields to Stork House, a ruined farm. From the farm follow a moorland track across the open access moor for about 1.5km the ford at Cinderhill Wath across Bonfield Gill at map ref. SE 611 930. The stream is piped under the track so the ford is normally dry. From the ford follow a track heading south west across the moor to the public road at map ref. SE 607 924. At the road turn left and walk along the road for about 2.4km back to the red phone box next to the church and the end of the walk.
